Weird, for me, clicking on a profile with a free account always brought up the "Upgrade!" screen.
I don't know about the limited number - true, I invite people who I know somehow, not anyone I see on the site, so I am at 47 contacts at the moment.

The must provide an e-mail limit I actually loved, that prevented people from linking with everyone. But that limit has been removed I think - you just click friend and you don't need an e-mail anymore.

I was totally surprised that I HAVE to provide so much contact data om Xing. Please, let me decide who get what, I don't neccessarily want to give my mobile phone number to all and sundry.

But I see your points.

Hmm, when I do the limited search I do can click on the profile link and actually invite the person to connect with me. What actually stopped me to use Xing was the limited number of people I can invite. But I've just hit the same barrier with free LinkedIn account too :-(

Perhaps I treat both systems just like WWYP but I like Xing more than LI mostly because of much more cleaner UI and because I can connect to the person without actually knowing e-mail of the person. Also most profiles include full contact data so I can just pick-up the handset and call the person when I need.

Roland, I had been thinking of using Xing so really appreciate your analysis. It's so hard to keep up with all the networks and how they will be useful. Perhaps we should recruit more Continental Europeans to LI and then it would be the best of both worlds. :-)

Karen

You are right, LinkedIn is mostly US, UK and Asia.
And true, I got more mails on Xing, mostly inviting me to events I could not go to :)
Thanks for the tip I will check it.
Can you contact with people through a group if you have a free account?

One thing is sure, Xing is Germanised. Which means, that 80% of the interesting groups are out for me.

Go to the groups page, here you see: "Most active groups (articles)"

Activity means not only the groups, it is also the way to get in contact with others, the number of mails and requests you get, linkedin is to much americanized in my opinion.

Schorle99, I had quite the opposite experience, but I have to admit that since I could hardly find anyone with the basic account I had, I am member of only 3 groups, none of them too active.
Can you point to groups who are active?

I like Xing more, because the users are much more active than on linkedin.
