Roland; here you go..An OpenSim region module that allows you
to send and receive instant messages from a Second Life compatible system via
a parallel login.
http://justincc.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/the-pa...
http://forge.opensimulator.org/gf/project/psimb/

Welcome to the world of OpenSim!

With the 'Parallell Selves' module, you can be in your OpenSim whilst chatting with Second Life friends: http://justincc.wordpress.com/2009/02/04/the-pa...

Thank you Maria, that's a good tip.
The problem is that the people I want to talk with are on the official Second Life grid, and while I know there are some early tries to link Second Life with OpenSim, as far as I know they are in the early stages.

Sorry, there was a typo: the release I have posted is the 0.6.4.9395 release. There are more recent releases of OpenSim -- new ones come out every day -- but I'm using ReactionGrid as my model. Their target focus is schools and businesses, and they're all about stability and reliability, and they're testing the new releases as they come out. When they upgrade, so will I. :-)

-- Maria

Roland --

No reason to be alone! Just set your .ini file to enable hypergrid teleports, and anyone from anywhere else on any OpenSim grid or standalone region will be able to visit you.

Hypergrid teleports work much like regular teleports -- avatars will show up wearing all their clothes, and with access to their home inventories. They can even rezz objects and give you things (permissions permitting).

I've posted some directions and a sample .ini file for the stable 9394 release (for SQLite users, that the base standalone comes with -- I might also post a MySQL version) here: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2009/06/quicke...

If you get on to the hypergrid -- or get an account on a grid that's hypergrid-enabled, you can visit me by pasting the following into the search line of your Map: grid.tromblyltd.com:9000:Trombly Ltd

There's also a starter list of places you can visit on the hypergrid here: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2009/06/what-i...

Basically, a standalone is just like a website. Sure, you can run it as an "intranet", on your own computer, but it's more interesting to connect it up to the rest of the universe. As more people put up hypergridded standalones, mini-grid, and big grids, we're starting to see a true 3D Internet emerge. It's already happening, and it's very exciting!
